The Empty Chair
Every day at 4:00 PM, an old woman named Mrs. Aditi would sit at a small table in a busy city cafe. She always ordered two cups of coffee, but she was always alone. She would place one cup in front of an empty chair and talk to it, smiling and whispering as if someone were sitting there.
The cafe staff thought she was senile. The teenagers laughed at her. They called her "The Ghost’s Wife."
One day, a young boy named Aryan, who worked at the cafe, decided to sit with her. He was curious and a bit kind-hearted.
"Ma’am," he asked softly, "who are you talking to every day? The chair is empty."
Mrs. Aditi looked at him with eyes that were surprisingly sharp and clear. "It’s not empty, son. My husband, Rahul, sits here. We’ve had coffee together at 4:00 PM for forty years."
Aryan felt a chill. "But... everyone says he passed away ten years ago in a car accident."
Mrs. Aditi smiled sadly. "They are wrong. He didn't die in the accident. I did."
Aryan froze. "What do you mean?"
The old woman leaned in closer. "Ten years ago, on our 40th anniversary, we were driving to this very cafe. A truck hit us. In that moment, I saw the light. I saw the end. But Rahul... he couldn't let go. He cried so hard, his soul stayed trapped in this world, waiting for me."
She took a sip of her cold coffee. "I am the one who is gone, Aryan. I am the spirit. I come here every day from the 'other side' just so he doesn't feel alone in his grief. To him, I am the empty chair. To me, he is the one I can't leave behind."
Suddenly, the cafe door opened. An old man, frail and leaning on a cane, walked in. He sat down at the table directly across from Aryan. He looked at the empty chair where Mrs. Aditi was sitting, placed a single red rose on the table, and whispered, "I miss you, Aditi. I'll see you soon."
Mrs. Aditi reached out and touched his hand, though he couldn't feel it. She looked at Aryan and winked.
When Aryan blinked, the old woman was gone. Only two cups of coffee remained—one full, and one completely empty.
